TURNING A THREAT INTO AN OPPORTUNITY
Climate change is an enormous threat to hau ora / wellbeing and to the health of the planet. Every day, we hear about the consequences on the news and increasingly will experience the impacts ourselves.
We can’t just sit around and wait to see what will happen next. We need positive action.
That’s why, together with the local community, the Maketu Iwi Collective developed a climate change adaptation plan to ensure the people of Maketu are prepared for, can adapt to, and will be resilient to a changing climate. This is an iwi-led, whole community effort.
While there are climate challenges, there are also significant opportunities – especially for us in Maketu. With our plan we aim to tackle the challenges and seize the opportunities, so we can safeguard the future of Maketū’s people, places and natural environment.

This plan is not intended to sit on a shelf, but to be brought to life.
We want to encourage our Maketu whānau, residents and manuhiri to have a kōrero and reflect on what you want the future to look like for you and the generations to come.
The more we talk about climate change, the more we think and care about it, the more likely we are to act on it!
So, take a good look at the plan, talk about it with your whānau, friends and neighbours, and think about what you can do to make this happen.
Let’s move away from climate anxiety and distress, towards climate action. Together we must protect our whenua and our people!

Is your kaupapa focused on improving te taiao within our rohe? Bay of Plenty Regional Council is encouraging those with future-focused environmental projects to apply for its Environmental Enhancement Fund.
The fund supports local, grass-roots community projects that have a vision of improving or protecting the natural or historical features of the rohe. You could receive up to $25,000 per application, per financial year.
Previous kaupapa include pest plant and animal control work, planting to improve biodiversity, converting land use to improve water quality, and establishing community gardens.

Ka nui te mihi ki a koutou katoa! To everyone who joined us for our Community Day recently – it was wonderful to come together and share our passions for protecting te taiao and future-proofing ourselves against climate change.
There are so many organisations doing amazing mahi in our community and it was great to get them all in one room to see the collective efforts happening in Maketu.
A big thank you to Andy Belcher and Alick Saunders for taking the photos for the day, and to Stephanie Bennett for collecting our stories.

The countdown is on until our Community Day this Saturday and we couldn’t be more excited!
There will be free activities for all ages, an opportunity to connect with others in our community, and learn about the climate change and mahi taiao happening right on our doorstep.
